Frederic Edwin Church showed an early interest in American art and began studying under local painters at a young age. Influenced by Romanticism, Church often depicted natural phenomena such as sunsets, storms, and glaciers with great drama and emotionality. He also incorporated symbolism into many of his works; for example, “The Heart Of The Andes” (1859) is said to represent spiritual enlightenment.
